Who is a Candidate for Weight Loss Surgery

At Lakeshore Laparoscopic Bariatric Center, many factors are considered when evaluating your readiness for weightloss surgery. The most common measurement for obesity is Body Mass Index (BMI). While BMI does not actually measure body fat, it tends to correlate well with the degree of obesity. For this reason, it should not be used alone for a diagnosis. This program uses the following criteria as a guideline to determine who is a candidate for lapband surgery. However, your surgeon has the final determination after reviewing your medical history.

  • You are between 18–60 years old.
  • Your BMI is greater than 40.
  • Your BMI is between 35–40 with severe health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or sleep apnea.
  • You have a 5 year history of obesity.
  • You have tried various weight loss programs with little or no success.
  • The ability to understand the surgery and its risks.
  • You are committed to long–term healthy lifestyle changes.
