The Lap-Band® System is the only adjustable weight loss surgery available. The key to successful weight loss is band adjustability, also referred to as a "fill". The diameter of the band has the flexibility to expand or detract in order to meet your specific needs. Adding saline to the band will make the band tighter, limiting your stomach capacity and the amount of food you can consume. Removing saline will increase your stomach capacity and your appetite. Your band will be left empty for a few weeks after surgery to allow for your stomach to heal.
The band is connected to a reservoir or access port which is located well under your skin. After surgery, the surgeon will put a fine needle into the port and add or remove saline solution. Local anesthesia is injected prior to the procedure, so minimal discomfort is experienced. Should the surgeon be unable to locate the port, an x–ray will be performed to determine the site.
The schedule of adjustments varies from patient to patient. Typically, the first fill is done 4 — 6 weeks after surgery and then as needed after that. If you find yourself eating larger meals, feeling hungry between meals or experiencing no weight loss, you probably need to see your surgeon for a fill.
An adjustment is a quick and painless process done at the surgical center during an office visit. A liquid diet should be adhered to for several days after your fill to allow your stomach time to adapt to the change.
